ADDIS ABABA, March 8 (NNN-ENA) -- President Girma Woldegiorgis of Ethiopia says that remarkable achievements have been registered in a very short time as the government ensures the participation and benefits of women.
Addressing the 2nd National Women's Movement Conference here on Sunday in connection with the celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, he said that tangible achievements had been registered in the effort to ensure participation and benefits of women in the country.
He said the results gained so far attested that the policies and strategies to ensure women's rights were on the right truck. The government, he added, had been facilitating various organizational forums to enhance the political participation ofwomen.
President Girma urged all stakeholders to intensify effort to further enhance the participation and benefits of women in society and he urged women to discharge their responsibilities to make the upcoming elections free, peaceful and democratic.
The celebration of the International Women's Day is an opportunity for women to redouble their efforts in an organized manner, he said.
Women's Affairs Minister Muferiate Kamil said the government was undertaking various activities to enhance the participation and ensure the benefits of women in ongoing development and in the country's democratic order.
She said women in rural and urban areas had become beneficiaries and models for many others.
The day which was celebrated under the theme "Let's expand best practice through organized participation of women", attracted ambassadors, senior government officials including ministers and invited guests.
President Girma inaugurated a book based on a true story that illustrated the heroic deeds of women during the bitter struggle to topple the Derg regime.
Some 300 development heroes and heroines including entrepreneurs, ministries, outstanding universities students, compatriots and individuals who contributed a lot for women's causes received awards from President Girma. -- NNN-ENA
