PERUVIAN WOMEN WANT TO RUN OWN BUSINESS AND BE COMPETITIVE
11/03/2010
LIMA, Mar 8 (NNN-ANDINA) - Research conducted by market studies firm Ipsos Apoyo revealed that 80 percent of Peruvian women want to run their own business indicating that they are more decided and competitive when thinking of ways of improving their quality of life.

The study was conducted in Lima, Trujillo, Huancayo, Arequipa and Iquitos aeas among women between 18 and 60 years old from all socio economic levels.

Also more than 50 percent of the participants consider that women should have a job besides taking care of their homes; mothers highlighted the satisfaction they feel (87 percent) because they can offer their children better living conditions than the ones they had.

This study is part of the "Unique's Barometer for Peruvian Women," launched by a local cosmetics firm.

Meanwhile in Peru, 25 percent of homes are headed by women, who assume both parental roles (mother and father) in order to raise their families, said Minister of Women and Social Development Nidia Vilchez when celebrating International Women's Day today.

Vilchez remarked that the women struggle to educate their children and added that her office will develop health and education programmes intended to help them and to reduce current discrimination at the workplace.

She praised the hard work of these women in the "International Women's Day" celebrations and regarded Micaela Bastidas, wife of historic Indian leader Túpac Amaru II as the symbol of Peruvian women.

Vilchez also said that in recent years more women are reporting cases of domestic violence to Women's Emergency Centers, 60 percent of cases in urban areas and 40 percent in country areas, and that in Peru about 12 women are killed by their partners every month. -- NNN-ANDINA
